A Better Look at Breast Cancer
3D Mammography Comes to RAMC
One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Eight out of nine women who do develop breast cancer have no family history. The numbers are scary, but there’s more reason than ever to be hopeful: with early detection, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is almost 100%.
Reedsburg Area Medical Center is excited to announce a new ally when it comes to detecting breast cancer: A 3D mammography machine that promises more accurate results and fewer callbacks.
Patients now have a new option when it comes to mammograms. While traditional 2D mammograms will still be available, women are encouraged to try the 3D option. In some cases, insurance will cover 100% of the test.
3D mammography brings many benefits to the patient. The new technology allows for a 41% increase in detection of invasive cancers, earlier detection than traditional 2D, and best of all, a 40% decrease in the number of unnecessary callbacks. Even though the new machine has been reported to be more comfortable than getting a traditional mammogram, technologists agree that it's never going to be the most enjoyable thing to do. That, along with the reduction in stress and worry, is why the 40% decrease in callbacks is such an impressive statistic.
As always, patients can depend on our caring staff and being treated like family. RAMC is honored to offer this potentially life-saving test to our family, neighbors, and community.
