Reedsburg Area Medical Center’s orthopedic surgeon Dr. Matt Niesen was the first in the state of Wisconsin to offer and implant Persona IQ, the world’s first and only smart knee implant approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for total knee replacement surgery. Thomas Priester of Randolph, WI was thrilled to be the very first patient in the State of Wisconsin to receive this cutting edge technology when he had his smart knee replacement surgery at RAMC on November 11, 2023.
Persona IQ, placed with the personalized knee implant, has sensor technology which measures range of motion, step count, walking speed and more. “I am excited to offer Persona IQ to my patients considering knee replacement surgery. This new to the world innovation provides important and objective motion data directly from the implant post-surgery,” says Dr. Matt Niesen, RAMC orthopedic surgeon.
“Persona IQ’s technology records and wirelessly transmits a wide range of data from the knee implant right to the patient’s personal and secure base station at home,” continues Dr. Niesen. “The data is then securely delivered to a HIPAA compliant, cloud-based platform and is accessed by me, my orthopedic team, including our orthopedic nurse navigator, and my patient. Persona IQ then works together with mymobility which is a care management platform that tracks pre and post-surgery mobility metrics.”
Says Thomas when interviewed six weeks post-surgery, “the technology is great. The recommended exercises come right to my cell phone which enhances the physical therapy that I do at home. The app tells me what to do and it is very easy to follow. My knee is better than it was and I will keep doing the work. That’s what is important.”
