RAMC Wound Care Team Competency Day
December 22, 2020
On November 24, 2020, the Reedsburg Area Medical Center Wound Care team completed their annual competency day. Wounds are complex, unique and are never a “one treatment for all.” RAMC’s team of wound care professionals receive continuous education so they are always on the forefront of the latest treatments for wounds.
This years’ topics included treatment of burns, lymphedema, choosing the right wound cleanser and troubleshooting ostomy care. An ostomy changes the way urine or stool exits the body as a result of surgery. Body waste needs to be redirected from its usual path sue to malfunctioning parts of the urinary or digestive system. This team also continuously learns about the newest products to assist in wound care healing.
We are proud to now offer Veraflo therapy. Veraflow Therapy is a negative-pressure wound therapy (also known as a vacuum-assisted closure) that uses a suction pump, tubing and a dressing to remove extra drainage and promote healing. In addition, it allows the wound care team to deliver wound cleansers and other solutions to the wound bed in a controlled manner to assist with removing infectious material.
And, the team received training on the application of “total contact casting.” Total contact casting is a technique designed to heal diabetic foot ulcers by relieving pressure on the prominent areas of the foot that are prone to skin breakdown and ulcers. This method is known as the “gold standard” and RAMC is proud to offer it!
The Wound Care team members are diverse and multi-faceted in specialties and all are wound care certified. They include two physical therapists, four registered nurses, one diabetic certified registered nurse and one registered nurse certified in ostomy. The team is further expanded by two nurses currently obtaining their wound care certification, and three patient care professionals who have received additional wound care training and competencies.
