Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is caused by the brain’s inability to regulate sleep-wake cycles normally. It is defined by a tendency to fall asleep at inappropriate times. Someone who has narcolepsy may have sudden sleep attacks, excessive daytime sleepiness, dream-like hallucinations while transitioning from wake to sleep and sleep paralysis (a short feeling of paralysis while falling asleep or waking up).
Sleep testing for narcolepsy includes both an overnight sleep study followed by a daytime study called an MSLT the following day. During an MSLT you will be given the opportunity to take five naps every two hours. Each nap opportunity will last about 20 minutes.
