RAMC Oncology partners with the Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative to provide What To Eat During Cancer Treatment cookbooks for patients and families.

REEDSBURG, WI – Reedsburg Area Medical Center (RAMC) today announced a new project to distribute What To Eat During Cancer Treatment cookbooks to patients and families who are in treatment and recovery from cancer. The cookbooks were purchased with a mini-grant awarded by the Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative, “a statewide coalition of organizations working together to reduce the burden of cancer for everyone in Wisconsin.”

“We are very excited to share this valuable resource with our patients,” Kirsti Raedel, RN-Chemotherapy said. “The cookbook is designed to offer options for a wide variety of symptoms that are often experienced during cancer treatment. Nutrition is very important for healing and strength, but it can be difficult for our patients to find foods that are appetizing and will work with their treatment. This cookbook offers real solutions.”

“So many of us care for our loved ones with food,” Jessica Abbott, RN-Chemotherapy said. “This cookbook will enable our patients, and their families, to find foods and recipes that will provide relief and nutrition at the same time.”
RAMC applied for a Survivorship Mini-Grant from the Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative to fund the cookbook project. RAMC was one of 13 recipients for the 2024-2025 award cycle.

“The RAMC Cookbook Project fulfills the goals of the Wisconsin Cancer Plan 2020-2030 by improving the quality of life for cancer survivors,” Beth Brunner, Program Director at the Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative said. “This is a perfect investment in our priorities.”

The What To Eat During Cancer Treatment cookbook is written and distributed by the American Cancer Society. It is organized by symptom: nausea, diarrhea, constipation, trouble swallowing, sore mouth or throat, unintentional weight loss or taste changes. Some recipes address multiple symptoms. For example, the Cran-Apple Slushie is recommended for people experiencing nausea, diarrhea and sore mouth.
RAMC will begin by distributing the cookbook to current patients, along with coaching and education.
